On March 24, 2020, the final result of the Shenzhen Yan Tian Mid-levels Park Area International Competition was officially announced: Following the Shenyan Road, the HOPE & MLA+ consortium won the first place in the international competition again. Congratulations to all the members of the project team!
Shenzhen Yantian Mid-Levels Park Area International Competition
The YanTian District of ShenZhen has a coastline of nearly 30 kilometers, 70% of the area under its jurisdiction is mountainous and forested, and the Mid-levels Park area is about 49km long. The project of Mid-level Park area is a public opened and public shared natural resources product following by the coastal plank road in YanTian District.
This competition is sponsored by the Bureau of Urban Management and Comprehensive Law Enforcement of Yantian District in Shenzhen. They have invited well-known local and overseas designers together planning and designing proposals. It aims to create a new high standard business card for Shenzhen mountain and forest area as a public opened and public shared city, showing the beautiful Yantian in a mountain and sea city.
The Winning Proposal: 「Listen to Yantian – The Path to Resonance between Mountains and Seas」
The Mid-Levels Park is 49 kilometers long, and each meter symbolizes the bright future of Yantian. With the opening of Shenzhen Metro Line 8, YanTian District will attract more attention as it has ever before.
The Core Value of the Project: 「Create the Nature Experience instead of a Landmark」
In our opinion, a landmark is shown to people through the photos we took, but the amazing nature experience is based on the story we told. The design proposal is based on three elements, four great rhythms from mountain and sea, combined with mountain and sea paths and traffic patterns extending in all directions, in order to create a pleasant natural tourism experience.
3 Major Design Elements
The strong identity of the entire Mid-Levels Park is composed of functional blocks and a slow network of trails. These key elements are adapted to different environments of the park and are intertwined with each other to make the function and accessibility of the area closer to the real interaction between human and nature, which is also ensure that the human activities will not exceed the load capacity of the park.
4 Rhythms of Mountains & Seas
We divide the entire park belt into 4 different landscape types: Urban Park Zones, Eco Mountain Park, Wild Mountain Park, and Mountain-sea Connections. From a cultural atmosphere of the city surroundings to the original ecology of the original natural wild ecology, people can experience the interactivity with nature through a smooth and coherent transition.
Network of Roads and Path
Fig 1. Pedestrian wooden plank path
Fig 2. The design of the functional walkway is as close as possible to the surrounding natural environment. Therefore, the original sidewalk has been transformed, and modern stone steps are laid at the entrance, which becomes a transition between nature and the pedestrian area.
Fig 3-4. The width of the continuous patrol road running through the park is 3.5-5 meters. The road can be shared by mountain patrol vehicles and pedestrians without opening to other vehicles.
Landscape Sketch – 100 Reverberations
Because the rhythm of the four mountains and seas and the context of the mountains and seas have greatly enriched the lack of mountain forest experience, we have designed 100 scattered landscape sketches in different areas based on the five senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and perception.
We believe that Mid-Levels Park will bring more urbanization benefits to local residents in the future life of YanTian. We look forward to the completion of Mid-Levels Park and the future of Yantian.
