On August 4, 2019, the lecture “Nature, the Essential Element out of Design” hosted by HOPE Design was held in the lecture hall of Guanshanyue Art Museum, Shenzhen. The theme is intended to focus not only on the difference of the therapeutic landscape compared to the common landscape but also on how it can enlighten the research on the current landscape industry.
Kangyang Design is the core business segment of HOPE Design. In recent years, HOPE Design has been devoted to the research and application of elderly care communities. It has cooperated with Taikang Group, Kangmei Group, Junkang Group, and other top domestic senior care service providers.
For this event, HOPE Design invited Mr. Daniel Winterbottom, a professor at the University of Washington, Mr. Antonio Inglese, Director of HOPE Design, and experts and scholars in the industry to discuss the development trend of elderly care design. The host is Mr. Qin Cao, executive director and chief designer of HOPE Design.
Daniel Winterbottom, a professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington in the United States, graduated from the Harvard School of Design. He has been studying in the field of the therapeutic landscape for many years. Professor Winterbottom systematically introduced the historical origin and contemporary development of the healing landscape to the audience. In particular, he introduced the research of the therapeutic landscape abroad in detail so that the audience can have a grasp on what therapeutic landscape is. The professor mentioned that the natural environment itself serves as a healing to the stress of the urban lifestyle.
Afterward, Professor Daniel Winterbottom detailed the ideas and design techniques behind a series of specific design practices. These cases include various types of sensory gardens, healing gardens, community service design, etc., thoroughly explained the research and thinking behind the therapeutic landscape by the professor himself and the team.
We are pleased to invite Dr. Chen Chongxian, the first associate professor of South China Agricultural University, as the invited academic translator of this lecture to interpret the speech of Mr. Daniel Winterbottom.
Antonio Inglese is the director and design director of HOPE Design. His lecture is titled “Preventing Before Healing.”
Mr. Antonio Inglese has vast experience in design practice overseas. He came to China in 2007 and designed a series of well-known works. Most of his speeches related to his experience and thinking overseas and his other possibilities, thinking and explorations related to therapeutic landscape design. He emphasized that we should be aware of the importance of preserving the “original content of the natural environment” such as biodiversity and the incorporation between human activities and nature.
Mr. Antonio Inglese is the chief designer of a series of projects cooperated by HOPE Design and Taikang Group. The ideas of his speech are coming from his design experience in China
Wu Xiaomeng, a researcher at the HOPE Design and Research Center and a master of landscape architecture at the University of Florida, translated the speech by Mr. Antonio Inglese.
The audience was enthusiastic about asking questions. More than 300 people signed up for this lecture. The audience included people with no design background who are interested in the therapeutic landscape, as well as professionals who have insights into the development of the urban public environment, and students and professors from well-known colleges and universities in this field. During this event, some graduate students have questions in the field surveys of landscape majors in universities in China, as well as reflections on the development of the public welfare of residents in Shenzhen. Everyone has a variety of perspectives, under the theme of “modern therapeutic landscape × design.”
This lecture ended in discussion with a pleasant atmosphere but no lack of in-depth communication.
HOPE Design held a “Nature, the Essential Element out of Design” lecture, intended to promote the knowledge exchange of the landscape industry and encourage the public to learn more about the landscape and pay attention to the development of the urban environments. As we expected, this lecture focuses on modern therapeutic landscapes and eventually discusses the design and urban development from a landscape perspective.
HOPE Design will continue to hold the “Nature, the Essential Element out of Design” lectures. We sincerely invite people interested in landscape, designers, and related experts and scholars in the industry to share their insights on the industry and the future with us, and promote the development of the landscape in urban spaces.
